"Tannin smoothing", "keratin smoothing", "protein smoothing": these names describe families of professional treatments, but the boundaries are blurred. This guide explains how we sort products at COIFFLISS, what manufacturers say about their formulas, and how to compare two treatments without any promise of results.
What "tannin" means in our selection
In our tannin smoothing category we group treatments where the manufacturer puts tannin forward, sometimes under the name taninoplasty. Deby Hair describes Lisa Protein as a protein smoothing treatment enriched with tannin and Brazil nut oil, and the ingredient list on its page mentions tannic acid, olive oil and a Brazil nut seed extract. Vitta Gold presents Silk Express as a taninoplasty system built on its Organic Tanino Fusion™ technology.
What "keratin" means in our selection
Our keratin smoothing category gathers treatments whose name or formula is built around keratin, such as the EcoKeratin products from Brasil Cacau. For these items we found no detailed manufacturer product page, so we present them by name, type and size, without any claim about results.
Why the categories overlap
The names are brand choices, not technical definitions. The ingredient list of Deby Hair Lisa Protein Blond, for example, mentions keratin amino acids, tannic acid and plant oils together, although the product is presented as a tannin protein treatment. A treatment filed under "protein", "tannin" or "keratin" may therefore contain elements of all three. To compare, it is better to read the product sheet and the ingredient list than to rely on the name alone.
Compare what the manufacturers ask for
- Deby Hair Lisa Protein (tannin and protein): 60 minutes leave-on, iron between 170 and 250 °C depending on hair type, for fine, brittle hair.
- Vitta Gold Silk Express (taninoplasty): 30 to 40 minutes leave-on, 8 to 15 passes at 220-230 °C, for thick, curly or resistant hair.
The protocol difference is as important a criterion as the name of the technique: it changes the time spent in the salon and the iron temperature required. Each brand asks for a strand test before the full application.
How to choose
- Note the hair type the manufacturer states for each product.
- Compare leave-on time and iron temperature.
- Read the ingredient list and check that the product is formaldehyde-free (all COIFFLISS treatments are).
- Check whether the protocol needs companion products sold separately.
- Do a strand test and follow the label.
Where to see the products
Browse the brand pages for Deby Hair, Vitta Gold, Salvatore and Brasil Cacau, or the protein smoothing category. Our guide Which Brazilian smoothing should you choose? walks through the hair-type approach.
The technique names you will come across
Brands often coin their own terms: taninoplasty, nanoplastia (Vitta Gold Nanoplex Arginina is presented as a nanoplastia treatment), selagem (a term in the name of Borabella's 3D Selagem range), "plástica dos fios" (the name of the Cadiveu kit in our catalogue). These words signal a brand approach; on their own they do not tell you what the product contains or what result to expect.
Reading an ingredient list
When a manufacturer publishes an ingredient list, the components are normally ordered from most to least concentrated. The Deby Hair Lisa Protein page starts with water and glyoxyloyl carbocysteine, then mentions among others tannic acid, olive oil and a Brazil nut seed extract, as well as preservatives and fragrances. For Silk Express, the Vitta Gold page does not publish an ingredient list. If a product interests you and the list is missing, ask the brand or the reseller for the technical sheet.
What we do not say
We do not say that one technique is better than another, or that a product suits a given client. We relay what manufacturers write, with the source, and we say when we found no information.
Two product sheets side by side
Take two official pages and read them with the same questions. Deby Hair Lisa Protein: fine, brittle hair, described as "sans formaldéhyde", Brazil nut oil, 60 minutes leave-on, iron between 170 and 250 °C, professional use only. Vitta Gold Silk Express: thick, curly or resistant hair, described as "sans formaldéhyde", Organic Tanino Fusion™ technology, 30 to 40 minutes leave-on, 8 to 15 passes between 220 and 230 °C. Both sit in the tannin family, yet they target different hair and ask for different protocols: it is this reading that helps you choose, not the category label.
